Biographies: Ed Schouten & Ron Lievens

The last couple of years, the term 'Big Data' has become a hype. Although there is often disagreement about how much data is considered 'Big Data', people often consider that data stored by search engines, email providers and video services excels that boundary easily.

In this talk we'll take a look at two database systems that can be used to store 'Big Data', namely Google's BigTable and the Open Source project that has been inspired by it, Apache Cassandra. On one hand we'll discuss these technologies from a theoretical perspective: why can it scale in the first place? On the other hand we'll discuss in which aspects Cassandra differs from BigTable and how it's used in practice.
