Since more than ten years there are two major worldwide Linux certifications, LPI and RedHat. The differences between those two are large.

Recently Linux Foundation released a brand new certification. This adds a new certification to the certification possibilities for Linux sysadmins. Although I am biased and not a technician myself I have tried to create an objective as possible overview of the similarities and differences between these three certifications.

Relevant aspects that differentiate the certifications:

* dependency / in-dependency
* costs of the exams
* accessibility of training material and exams
* vulnerability to fraud
* sort of exams
* brand awareness among the different target groups
* number of certified professionals
* maturity of the certification pathway
* openness of business model
* non-profit / profit
* How to contribute and have influence?
* Market Segments
* distribution neutral / specific
* Marketing power of the organisation supporting the certification.

Summary: The new LF certification positions itself right between the current two available certs. Is the market big enough for three certs? Time will tell!
