Education (Open Source in Onderwijs)
Joek van Montfort
Track 4 (1st floor)

The position of Computer Science (Informatics) in Dutch education is very fragile. Quality heavily depending on the individual teacher, and most schools don't even have such a teacher. Both academia and industry ask for change. Government is hesitating. They have no idea how to get teachers for this field and therefore don't want to propose any solution depending on such teachers.

In one sees education as transfer of knowledge about the world around us to next generations it's strange that this body of knowledge is neglected. Pedagogically the field has a lot on offer about general skills (abstraction, generalization, thinking, ...) which in itself is a reason to teach it.

In this climate of "we need to do something, but don't know what ..." the people which promise the solution are in the lead. To often this solution turns out to be a hype, wasting time, money and attention. The same people come up with better solutions and the proces repeats.

I think the problem is way to important to start with solutions. With Bitplan I want to establish a network of people concerned who will find out what needs to be done and just do it. Like the British Computing at School such a network needs the support of thousands.

At T-Dose I want to discuss how Open Source community can contribute.

The name Bitplan refers to Deltaplan. A plan with support form a wide range of parties aimed at solving a problem with no clear solution (water safety).
